Abstract: The contractual challenge to maintain the initial agreed conditions, guaranteeing that the gains generated by the exchange are efficiently shared, gets harder as long as its term increases. Long-term Construction Contracts that specify the production of a specific asset, over extensive periods, which will be traded with a counterpart in exchange of a financial amount, express a particular case of long-term contracts. In this study the risks inherent to this contractual modality are listed and its managing tools are analyzed. Nevertheless, many times, the contractual instrument may have a restricted reach, succeeding that the extra contractual shielding tools become highly recommended. Thus, derivatives, as considered in this study, figure as excellent mechanisms to mitigate the risk involved on this type of contract.
