Custos ambientais, sociais e econômicos da escolha inadequada de local para a disposição final dos resíduos sólidos urbanos: o caso da cidade de Juiz de Fora

Abstract

This essay tries to show the consequences in the use of inadequatte areas as deposit of solid residues (garbage). It has in its base the real case of the city of Juiz de Fora/MG, Brazil. From January 1999 and eversince, its has been facing enormous problems on how to dea with its garbage. This is the result of inadequate area chosen as depoit and acts against environmental legislation. According to texts published in newspapers, ublic deeds, interviews an technical decisions, the consequences of having a landfill site near the Federal Highway (BR-040) for final sollid residue destination are: environmental costs (embankment and contamination of springs, contamination of the water table, embankment of the riverhead in the area called Salvaterra, devastation of green covering, erosive process and accident risks with the trucks wilhe transportig landfillleachates to the Station of Treatment of Sewer Waste); socia costs lealth risk for the local population due to the containation of the shallow wells of the area,; potential flying accidents for the place is near the local airport; decrease of commerce and tourist activities of the region and farm prodution nearby); economical costs (investments in the recovery of the garbage/landfill site disposal, emergency repairs, payment of fines, among other issues).
