Abstract
This thesis aims to apply in the analysis of collective games the theoretical
presuppositions of Functional Linguistics of North-American basis, which, differently
from the formalist approach, defined the game as an instrument of social interaction
among players. Thus, a functional approach of the game, which observes and
analyzes the motor regularities of a group of players of beach volleyball practiced in a
less conventional way, has been constructed using the motor data and the verbal
expressions of the subjects of the research. The functional principles, reformulated
for this work, have given account of facts and semantic procedures of polysemies,
changes, variations and pragmatic ambiguities in the actions of the game. The results
of the research indicated that, in the functional perspective, the grammatical structure
of the game is a dependent variable of the players use.
