Abstract
This document presents the results of an exploratory research involving five
companies of the Brazilian telecommunications segment: Vivo, TIM, Claro, Embratel and
Intelig. The research was carried through 16 teams belonging to the software development
area of those companies, adding up to 50 respondents. The objective was to identify the
existence of a correlation between the medium managers leadership practices and the
maturity level of the software development processes from the teams they belong to. The
instruments used on this research were Kouzes and Posner s LPI, to measure the leadership
practices, and SEI s CMMI, to measure the maturity level. The sample gathered hasn t
presented any indication of the existence of this correlation: the measured maturity levels
were low for almost all teams (of all, only three seem to be classified on CMMI s maturity
level two) and there was a wide variety of leadership practices, not showing the existence of a
uniform leadership profile in this sector. The evidences collected through the research indicate
that leadership, although seeming to have some influence, isn t the only factor that determines
the process maturity level.
