Abstract: This work presents a study of the performance of real time applications, particularly of voice over IP (VoIP), in an 802.11 Mesh network. This type of application requires that the network can supply guarantees in terms of throughput, delay, jitter and loss parameters. This work combines analytical, simulation and experiments carried out in a real network to analyze the main factors that degrade the quality of real time applications in Mesh networks. In addition, the experimental results reveal the impact of these factors over the network traffic capacity. With these results, it is possible to point out some alternative ways to reduce the effect of the degradation on network capacity and the effect of these alternatives on the quality metrics in voice applications.
