Abstract: If we compare the conditions of SMS in Petrobras atmosphere with the reality of companies of small, medium and even of great size, still untouched by the question - it is noticed an enormous difference in the conditions work. However, these two realities have common aspects, such as the occurrence of accidents because, among other causes, behavioral issues. The tendencies show that to reach the excellence in the safety's management and occupational health it is necessary the accomplishment of a scientific and including approach of the human behavior, conjugated with several fields of knowledge. In this sense, this work develops and presents a critical analysis to include behavioral attributes in current management systems. For this, it was realized a collection of data and information related to the current safety and health management system of the organization, including its indicators, and a literature review (involving books, norms, guides, papers, specialized journals) and interviews, involving theoretical aspects in ergonomics, human performance, human reliability and psychology applied to work, as well as an application of a questionnaire (behavioral inventory). The results obtained permit infer that the behavioral dimension is one of the paths to be followed by the employer/manager in the pursuit of management excellence in work security and safety.
