Abstract
This work is the result of a research on journalistic discourse about the description of Rio de Janeiro‟s urban violence in the course of September 1st to October 31st of 2004, according to French Discourse Analysis theoretical discipline. As it considers that every description is related to an interpretation, as well as it considers that there is no metalanguage, which implies to discredit the reference delusion related to the journalistic discourse, the analyzed fragments of a newspaper‟s front page were submitted to examination as from descriptive gestures related to the subject who occupies the journalist position. The urban reality description materializes interpretative gestures that impute a discursive place both to reader and journalist, by referring to other senses that are carried by meaning fissures which allow observing the beating between description and interpretation, both constitutive to every discourse. The journal news produce sense effects that authenticate a State and citizen spokesman role to the journalist, as this subject-position describes the reality by associating poverty to violence by corresponding nominative language features to the agents of violence, to the victims and to the urban space. This linguistic procedure superposes the city heterogeneity as restricts meaning gestures on the subject urban memory.
