Abstract
The dissertation presents the ideas of the critic musical José Ramos
Tinhorão from the analysis of his articles in two moments of his
career in Jornal do Brasil: the weekly column Primeiras lições de
samba (1961-1962) and Música Popular (1974-1982). The
journalist was known for his radical vision of Brazilian popular
music, presenting it, in his writings, with a marxist and
nationalistic approach. Although the decade of 1960 has been
marked for a strong nationalistic speech among the lefts, Tinhorão
seems to have gone beyond. Many successful MPB artists had
been criticized by him. Thus, determined sectors of the Brazilian
culture didn t see his productions very well. However, the
journalist contributed enormously with his innumerable researches
on Brazilian popular music. The present study wants, through the
examination of his ideas about Brazilian music, to understand the
nationalism that guided his thoughts and analyze the ambiguity of
feelings awoke by Tinhorão in the Brazilian cultural scene.
