Abstract
The artistic productions of the users of mental health services gain visibility in
the 20th century. As of the psychiatric reform movement, they gradually leave
the asylums and are inserted in the Brazilian cultural scene. Therefore,
paintings, plays, poetry, sculpture and music emerge as discursive
manifestations which symbolize a way of being and saying, that is, an ethos.
The purpose of this paper is to analyse the songs composed by Harmonia
Enlouquece a band originated at Centro Psiquiátrico Rio de Janeiro
highlighting the recurring themes detailing the sceneries and the making up of
the ethos to grasp their meanings and methods of creation. It is essential to
demonstrate that the lyrics of the band Harmonia Enlouquece aim to contest the
psychiatria rationality, thus criticizing day to day behavior and the disciplinary
society. Consequently, it founds a unique perspective in which the stigma and
the exclusion associated to mental illness and its care are destabilized. Having
the French Discourse Analysis and Semiotics of songs as guidelines the
author intends to show, how the meanings of the songs are developed as well
as to emphasize the singularity with which the band inaugurates a differential in
coping with the stigma. Irony is used to mitigate the consequences of exclusion.
