Abstract
The intima-media thickness (IMT) from the carotid arteries from healthy subjects with family history of arterial hipertension were compared with those without family history, all of them without other cardiovascular risk factors knowledge. The intima-media thickness (IMT) structural analysis of the left common carotid artery was measured by high-resolution Bmode ultrasound imaging in 96 individuals aged 12-30 years A total of 67 subjects had a family history of arterial hipertension, aged 12-30 years, and 29 subjects had no family history of arterial hipertension, aged 12-30 years. Other measurements included: anthropometrical data (waist circunference [W], hip circunference [H], relation W/H, weight, height, and corporal mass index [CMI]); systolic and diastolic brachial blood pressure .The left common carotid artery IMT does not differ statistically (p = 0,5703) between groups of individuals with hypertensive parents and individuals with normotensive parents. It should be noted however, that the findings are within normal limits, the methods employed. Individuals with family history of arterial hypertension showed higher intima media thickness carotid (structural change) in the left common carotid artery, compared with a group without such a relatioship, but within normal limits.
