Abstract
This work treats the technique of make-up as a language, on the level of
expression and the level of content and realised in texts painted on the face and/or the
body of a person, historically situated in a specific time and space. It uses the
theoretical base of discourse semiotics and proposes a methodology of analysis which
takes in account the semiotic function of the body and the enunciation praxis of the
various forms of make-up and body painting. The examples of social make-up, body
painting and stage make-up are analyzed in their aspects discursive and tensive,
starting from the concepts suggested by the professor of semiotics Jacques Fontanille
(2004, 2007). It is observed that the make-up, like any language, creates codes socially
interpretable by the customs or produces meanings unexpected from the expression
that is created between the sensible and the intelligible.
