Abstract
This thesis aims at examining the impact of two social programs Bolsa Treinamento e o Conexões de Saberes: Diálogos entre a universidade e as comunidades populares sponsored by Universidade Federal Fluminense in the academic trajectories of poor students. In order to reach our goal we used both quantitative and qualitative data mainly those collected during interviews with former beneficiaries of those programs. The biographical analysis of the narratives of students interviewed who were part of these programmes is intended to seize the impact of these on student‟s academic trajectories. This study is introduced by presenting some research and a brief overview of higher education in Brazil. Subsequently, social assistance policies in Brazil are discussed and dealt specifically in relation to social assistance. The institutional programmes are detailed in order to present results of the statistical treatment given to the database produced. Finally, some educational study present the tracks of actors surveyed reporting their experiences inside and outside the academic area.
