Abstract

In Rio de Janeiro, there are never-ending cases of violence involving police officers. With countless numbers of cases of unlawfulness and corruption practiced by law enforcement officers, what mechanisms are available to our society so that it may defend itself from such common practices performed by the State s equipped police enforcement? The main objective of this work is the investigation of the two institutions that are responsible for the defense of the citizen against abuse and violations of the law by agents who work for an institution that is of major importance to the State: the police. I intend to discuss the controversies and experiences of both the Ombudsperson's office and of the Police Internal Affairs Department
