Abstract

This paper aims to analyze how a poor community in the western the city of Rio de Janeiro deals with the presence of police groups engaged in community protection differently, acting as a group parastatal organized having as main objective to curb drug trafficking on site. The consequences of this action causes in the community are controversial, since it generates sense of security in Most residents of the locality, and while some embarrassment people who do not identify with this type of practice. The guiding hypothesis is that the action these groups significantly alters community life in that space, giving it characteristics distinct from other outlying communities of socioeconomic similar. To better analyze the impact of this specific situation, we use the concept of capital, noting that the performance of this group stimulates the accumulation of capital in the community. It was concluded that although the actual sense of community experiment safety, it was not able to promote virtue relevant associations and, Therefore, there was no significant increase of capital in place
