|Abstract:||The elaboration of the strategies that orientate the future of the companies is, more and more, dependent of the information and of the knowledge generated by their external environment of businesses, mainly, for those companies that opt to internationalize their products and/or services. The ignorance of that has been one of the factors of failure of the brazilian companies in the attempt of they conquer the international markets. Among the models that link with environmental scanning, outstands the process of Competitive Intelligence that it has been used with success, above all, in the larger businesses. Meantime, if this practice is common in the larger firms the same cannot be said as the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). From the analysis of the data collected through a survey made in 26 SMEs brazilians exporters of certified wood solids tried to identify in these companies the level of use of an effective process of Competitive Intelligence, and besides, to verify the influence of this process in the evolution of the incomes and in the protection of the businesses. The results reinforced the hypotheses that (1) a minority of the researched companies makes effective and regular use of a structured process seeking to monitor their competitive environment of businesses and as consequence to increase the quality of their decison taking process; (2) the companies researched that present an expressive level of use of Competitive Intelligence are obtaining financial advantages with the scanning of their external envitonment, besides (3) be more capable and more protected of the attempts of incursions on the part of their rivals.|
