The challenge of understanding the interplay of the ideas of equidecomponibility and equivalence of volume of polyhedra has fascinated many generations of mathematicians, until Max Dehn finally came up with a satisfactory explanation in 1900. Our paper discusses the complex process of how mathematicians became aware of the weaknesses in Euclid’s proof of his theorem XI.28. The paper analyzes the work of contributors already somewhat studied by the literature, like Clavius, Tacquet, Stafford, Simson, Simpson, Legendre, Ampère, and Lacroix, and also studies the hitherto almost unknown but highly relevant contributions by Fournier and by Manoel de Campos. The focus is in fact on this eighteenth century Portuguese mathematician whose solution, coming from Europe’s margin, was first acknowledged by a Brazilian.pt_BR
